Purpose Statement:
The job of Water Safety Assistant is done for the purpose/s of providing basic instruction to students; monitoring students and the public; complying with mandated health requirements; and maintaining accurate records.
Essential Functions
• Evaluates situations involving other staff, students, parents, the public, etc. for the purpose of taking appropriate action and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.
• Instructs students in basic swimming for the purpose of meeting physical education requirements.
• Maintains pool and pool equipment (e.g. evaluates chlorine and acid level, checks diving board, etc.) for the purpose of complying with mandated safety and heath requirements.
• Maintains student records (e.g. current level, grades, etc.) for the purpose of providing accurate information and complying with current District standards and expectations of the Aquatic Center Program.
• Monitors swimming pool facility (e.g. locker room, pool, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the safety and welfare of students.
• Prepares lesson plans for the purpose of providing accurate swim instruction for students at all levels.
Other Functions
• Assists other personnel, as may be required, for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective work environment.
• Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
SKILLS are required to perform single, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; administering first aid; operating equipment used in swimming pool maintenance and operations; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: age appropriate activities; health standards and hazards; safety practices and procedures; and swimming pool maintenance and operations.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities; gather and/or collate data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with similar types of data; and utilize job-related equipment. In working with others, problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; working as part of a team; and working with frequent interruptions.

Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 100% sitting, % walking, and % standing. The job is performed under with some temperature extremes and some hazardous conditions.
